HOW DO BOTOX AND DYSPORT WORK?

Botox® Cosmetic & Dysport® work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that are responsible for skin wrinkling. This injectable treatment can improve the appearance of certain wrinkles that are related to facial expression such as crow’s feet, frown and forehead lines.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR NEUROTOXIN TREATMENT?

The best candidates for this treatment are men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of certain expression-related wrinkles such as crow’s feet and forehead lines. It is important to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations. If you are older than 65, you may have a less optimal outcome.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® COSMETIC AND DYSPORT®?

Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and has been used for many years in treating patients with muscular disease and over ten years in the cosmetic market. Dysport® is derived from cow based protein and is newer to the US market, but has been used in Europe for many years. Your clinician will assess and go over which treatment is right for you based on cost, amount of product needed to achieve desired results, and previous experience with the products.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE?

The procedure is relatively quick and simple with minimal pain or discomfort. A series of pinpoint injections are made into the targeted muscles and, if necessary, a topical anesthetic cream or ice can be applied to help reduce discomfort.

WHAT TO EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER BOTOX® COSMETIC/DYSPORT®?

You may experience some minor amount of swelling or bruising at the injection site. Arnica may be recommended to help with possible swelling and or bruising. Most patients return immediately to work or other normal activities.

WHAT ARE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS (RISKS)?

The most common side effects are bruising, pain or tenderness at the injection site and temporary headache. All details of the procedure will be provided during your appointment.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

Most patients see results within five to seven days of the treatment. However, in some cases it may take up to two weeks.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Results typically last from three to five months.

WHO IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX® COSMETIC/DYSPORT®?

You may not be a candidate if you have certain neuromuscular disorders, if you are pregnant, if you are breastfeeding, or you have a skin infection at the planned injection site. You are not a candidate for Dysport® if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein.

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers encompass a range of products used in a procedure in which extremely fine needles are used to inject minute quantities of filler into the skin to smooth wrinkles, minimize imperfections, and add volume. Cara Mia Medical Day Spa clinicians are extremely talented and, with an artistic eye, are able to achieve optimum results for their patients.

Using their experience, along with listening to the needs of the patient, the clinicians at Cara Mia Medical Day Spa will make a determination which product (or products) are required to achieve optimum results.  Products available at Cara Mia Medical Day Spa are:

  • Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC, Hyaluronic Acid product with lidocaine (numbing agent) added for comfort
  • Perlane L®, Hyaluronic Acid product with lidocaine (numbing agent) added for comfort
  • Radiesse®, Synthetic Hydroxylapatite
  • Restylane L® and Restylane® Silk, Hyaluronic Acid product with lidocaine (numbing agent) added for comfort
  • Sculptra® Aesthetic, Poly-L-lactic Acid
  • Juvéderm®Voluma, Hyaluronic Acid

WHAT ARE HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS?

Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus, Perlane®, Restylane® and Silk, and Juvéderm® Voluma are all hyaluronic acid fillers, which is a substance that occurs naturally in our joints. These products are made in laboratory conditions from plant material. Juvéderm is the softest of the fillers and is used to augment lips with Juvéderm® Voluma offering the most volume and is injected deeper into the dermis. The other fillers are used elsewhere in the face; i.e. nasolabial folds (smile lines), cheeks, tear trough and acne scars.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

The length of time the product remains in your body is dependent upon the product used and the way your own system metabolizes the product.  They are broken down and excreted in your urine. The prolonged use of the products causes your own fibroblasts to produce more collagen over time.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

Many of the products have a numbing agent mixed with the product so are less painful.  With products that do not have an added agent your clinician will apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment. After the effect of the numbing has dissipated you may feel minimal soreness in the injected areas which will last for a matter of hours.

WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TREATMENT?

The area will be red and may have some swelling. Make–up can be applied in an hour. These products are pliable for 2 hours so we recommend a still face until they have “set up”. Bruising is the most common side effect. Stopping products that thin the blood (warfarin, Coumadin) and taking arnica a few days before help prevent bruising.

LASER TREATMENTS

e-matrix™

e-Matrix™ is Sublative Radio Frequency that directs energy just below the skin in a matrix pattern. The healthy skin around the spots accelerates the healing process. Post treatment, new collagen and healthy skin cells are produced resulting in smoother skin and better tone and texture.

e-Matrix™ is safe for all skin types and is ideal for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring and stretch marks. Mild discomfort often described as a warm, prickly sensation may be experienced during the treatment. Immediately following the treatment, the skin will appear red like a sunburn which will linger throughout the healing process. As the skin heals over 2-4 days, it will feel rough like sandpaper.

For optimal results, a series of treatments is recommended followed by periodic maintenance treatments.

FRAXEL® RE:STORE

Fraxel® Re:Store utilizes technology called fractional photothermolysis that creates multiple, microscopic thermal heat zones over 20% of the skin’s surface with each treatment. Collagen is remodeled over time resulting in smoother, healthier, yourger-looking skin. Fraxel re:Store is ideal for improving pigmentation problems and reducing fine to moderate lines and wrinkles.

HOW DOES FRAXEL® RE:STORE WORK?

This procedure uses erbium laser energy to resurface damaged skin and uncover the skin of your youth. Microscopic laser columns penetrate deep into the dermis to create tiny wounds, which trigger your body’s natural response system to heal those wounds. This process expedites your body’s remodeling of collagen and elastin, which results in tighter, fresher, more youthful looking skin. This results in an overall textural improvement with reduction of age spots/sunspots, wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, melasma, and some acne and surgical scars.

WHAT’S THE TREATMENT LIKE?

At the time of your consultation your clinician will prescribe the appropriate home care regimen to prep your skin for the procedure.

The day of your treatment we will apply a topical numbing cream. Your clinician will then cleanse the area to be treated and apply a thin gel to facilitate the glide of the hand piece. Your eyes will be protected with goggles. Depending upon the size of the area being treated, actual treatment times average 60 minutes.

The laser head delivers a prickling sensation as it moves over an area. The numbing cream lessens this to a very tolerable level. Your clinician may suggest taking an oral pain medication prior to the procedure if a deeper treatment is required. However, if sedation is required, you will need to arrange for a driver.

Immediately after the treatment, the skin may be pink or light red and begin to swell. Patients usually return home to ice the area that day to reduce these symptoms. Most return to regular activities in a few days.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO COME BACK FOR THE TREATMENT?

The recommended course of treatment is 4 sessions, one every 4 – 6 weeks. Follow up treatments can be done at the patient’s discretion. Some opt for periodic maintenance treatments to keep collagen stimulation active and subsequent sun damage in check.

WHEN CAN I SEE VISIBLE RESULTS FROM FRAXEL® RE:STORE?

The majority of patients notice a difference after the first session, but overall results are cumulative and may take longer to be appreciated. Improvement is predicted to be around 80% and best observed 3-6 months after the full course of treatment.

WILL THE RESULTS BE PERMANENT?

The degree of improvement accomplished with your initial series of treatments is considered permanent. However, the effects of the aging process and future environmental exposure will always continue to be present. Appropriate homecare and sun protection are imperative to combat these factors and to maintain your results.

INTENSE PULSED LIGHT – IPL

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photo facial is a non-ablative (non-damaging) therapy that focuses on deeper layers of skin to promote new collagen production and small vessels to improve skin tone, smoothness and appearance. The treatment focuses on the following skin issues: rosacea, facial vascular redness, large pores, sun damage and hyperpigmentation. It is also a preventive and maintenance treatment to reduce general signs of aging. A non-laser medical device delivers a series of gentle pulses of visible light onto the surface of your skin. A series of four or more treatments is recommended. Some patients might seek to do chemical peels or DiamondTome treatments in conjunction with IPL treatments to enhance results.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Hair removal lasers passes a beam of light through the skin to the hair follicle. Without damaging the skin, the laser transforms heat to disable the follicle. Enjoy the quick and easy removal of unwanted hair without shaving, tweezing or waxing. Results are optimal on light-skinned individuals with dark hair. Prices vary depending on areas treated and the number of treatment sessions needed. Consult with our skin care professionals to determine whether this treatment is right for you.

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

All laser hair removal systems target the pigment in the root of the hair follicle. If your hair is white, blonde, grey or light red the laser will not recognize the hair. To be effective the laser requires multiple treatments as it is only targeting hair in the anagen phase or growing phase. If the hair follicle is breaking down or in the catagen phase, or resting in telogen phase, the laser won’t be effective in eliminating the hair. Depending on the area of hair being treated it could require five to fifteen treatments to effectively reduce hair growth.

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?

The laser does sting, so we apply a topical numbing prior to the treatment. Our laser also shoots out a cryogen spray prior to the laser beam to help cool and protect the area from burning. On laser impact, many of the hair follicles are burnt and break off, but some may remain behind. The area may be red for several hours or up to a day or so. We will apply a topical steroid and ice after the treatment to assist with the redness and discomfort.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO REPEAT THE TREATMENT?

Most treatments are scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks. After time, most people will see an 80 to 90% reduction in hair growth. A yearly touch up is common.

thermage®

Thermage® is a non-surgical procedure that promotes the growth of new collagen in the face and body, which helps skin appear more youthful. It is a medically tested and proven effective cosmetic procedure that uses radio waves to target deeper layers of tissue under the skin while leaving the top layers of skin unharmed. As a result, there is not down time and patients can resume normal activity immediately. During the following few months after the procedure, collagen begins to rebuild in the patient’s skin and tightening of the treated area occurs.

WHAT IS THERMAGE®?

Thermage® is a device that delivers radiofrequency waves that heat the deep layers of the skin which stimulates the existing collagen and promotes new collagen growth, making the skin smoother, tighter and firmer.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

When the energy is applied you will feel a deep, but brief, heating sensation. To protect the surface of the skin, a cooling spray is delivered before, during and after each application. You will be asked for feedback on the level of heat sensation you are feeling (scale of 1 to 10) and this will allow the clinician to balance your comfort with maximum results. Numbing cream is not used as this interferes with the treatment, but oral medication can be ordered. Full face treatments can take two and one-half hours to perform.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

After the treatment the skin may be pink and tender. Makeup may be applied and regular activities can be resumed. Very rarely do blisters or bumps occur.

HOW SOON WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Some patients see a result right after the procedure, others it can take 3 to 6 months. There is a certain percentage of patients that see no results from the treatment.

CYNOSURE CYNERGY™ VASCULAR LASER

The Cynosure Cynergy™ Vascular Laser  is used to treat vascular lesions, including facial veins, leg spider veins, rosacea, reddened scars, stretch marks, brown spots and birthmarks. This laser offers little to no post-treatment bruising or downtime.

HOW DO VBEAM LASER VEIN TREATMENTS WORK?

The laser produces a beam of highly concentrated energy (light) that is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the diluted blood vessel. It causes the blood to coagulate and the unwanted vessel to gradually disappear as the body naturally dissolves the vessel.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE?

Protective eye goggles will be worn to protect your eyes and anesthetic cream may be used depending on the area being treated. Patients describe the sensation as a rubber band being snapped on the skin. Treatments usually take 15-30 minutes.

ARE LASER VEIN TREATMENTS PAINFUL?

Patients do report some minor discomfort as a rubber band snapping against the skin. The machine delivers a cooling spray to help with the discomfort and topical anesthetic cream can be used.

WHAT TO EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR TREATMENT?

There can be considerable redness, and some swelling. Ice or cold compresses can be applied for comfort and to reduce swelling. Bruising may occur and will typically resolve within a week. We recommend you allow 1-2 days of downtime, but find most people return to work or other normal activities immediately.

WHAT ARE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS (RISKS)?

Mild swelling is expected and can last for 2-3 days. If bruising occurs it may take 1-2 weeks to resolve..

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

Results can be seen within three to four weeks after the treatment. A series of treatments is usually necessary for optimal results.

WHEN CAN I DO ANOTHER TREATMENT?

Treatments can be done four to six weeks apart.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

Results can vary depending on severity of area being treated and usually require three or more treatments. One treatment can improve area from anywhere between 30-70%. Many factors will affect how long the results last including skin care, sun protection, heredity and it is common to need touch up treatments within a few years.

ULTHERAPY®

Ultherapy® procedure is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that utilizes ultrasound technology to deliver energy just to the right depth in order to achieve firmer, tighter looking skin. The body uses it’s own natural repair process to gradually strengthen the skin and underlying tissue support.

Ultherapy® is the only FDA-cleared procedure to non-invasively lift the eyebrow, neck and under-chin and to improve décolletage lines and wrinkles!

HOW DOES ULTHERAPY® WORK?

A  smooth applicator is placed on your skin that projects an image onto the screen displaying the various tissue layers. The applicator delivers tiny deposits of focused energy at just the right depth to achieve a positive effect. The skin’s response is to stimulate new collagen production over 3-6 months. The skin tightens and firms resulting in a natural lift in the skin.

IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?

There can be temporary discomfort during the procedure as the energy is being delivered. Comfort measures vary from person to person, and we will discuss various ways to keep you comfortable during the treatment.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

Ultrasound energy has been safely used in medical procedures for over 50 years. You may experience temporary swelling and tenderness immediately following the procedure. Minor bruising is possible. Slight numbness and tingling for the first 30 days have been reported.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?

With just one treatment, gradual firming and tightening may be seen over 3-6 months. Depending upon the degree of laxity and wrinkles, some patients may benefit from more than one treatment.
