WHAT IS BOTOX?

BOTOX Aurora CABotox® is derived from the bacteria that produce botulinum toxin type A, the same bacteria that can cause botulism. This sounds a little intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. Back in the 1950s scientists discovered that when the botulinum toxin was injected in very minute amounts into a muscle it stopped the muscle from contracting for a period of time. That research led to the development of Botox®. Botox® was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of involuntary eyelid spasms. The FDA approved Botox® for the treatment of wrinkles on the upper third of the face in 2002. Since then, Botox injections have been the single most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide every year.

HOW DO BOTOX AND DYSPORT WORK?

Botox® Cosmetic & Dysport® work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that are responsible for skin wrinkling. This injectable treatment can improve the appearance of certain wrinkles that are related to a facial expression such as crow’s feet, frown and forehead lines.

What is the botulinum toxin type A?

The botulinum toxin is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which can be found throughout the natural world in soil and even water. There are seven distinct forms of botulinum toxin, with type A being using for Botox® and Dysport. The botulinum toxin stops muscle contractions by blocking nerve messages sent from the muscles to the brain.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® COSMETIC AND DYSPORT®?

Botox Parker COBotox® Cosmetic is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and has been used for many years in treating patients with muscular disease and over ten years in the cosmetic market. Dysport® is derived from cow based protein and is newer to the US market, but has been used in Europe for many years. Your clinician will assess and go over which treatment is right for you based on cost, amount of product needed to achieve desired results, and previous experience with the products.

What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?

Some people lump Botox® in with dermal fillers, but they work in completely different fashions. As mentioned above, Botox® works on dynamic wrinkles by blocking the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. The brain doesn’t receive the message to contract the muscle, so it stays relaxed and the wrinkle formed when the muscle contracts doesn’t form.

Dermal fillers work on the other type of wrinkle, known as static wrinkles. These wrinkles are due to sun damage, thinning skin with age, declining production of collagen, and personal habits such as smoking. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times and are not related to muscle contractions. Dermal fillers are injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, of area of volume loss and they simply “fill” in the space, pushing the skin upward and erasing the wrinkle.

Botox® doesn’t have any effect on static wrinkles, and dermal fillers don’t work on dynamic wrinkles.

BOTOX FAQs

WHAT AREAS OF THE FACE CAN BE TREATED WITH BOTOX?»

Botox® only works on wrinkles that are formed when muscles contract under the skin. These are called dynamic wrinkles. They occur when we make expressions such as frowning or squinting. Botox® erases crow’s feet on the outside of the eyes, the 11s between the eyebrows, and forehead lines.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR NEUROTOXIN TREATMENT?»

The best candidates for this treatment are men and women who are looking to improve the appearance of certain expression-related wrinkles such as crow’s feet and forehead lines. It is important to be in good overall health and have realistic expectations. If you are older than 65, you may have a less optimal outcome.

What is the Botox procedure like?»

Botox® injections were where the term “lunchtime procedure” came from. Botox is injected with a tiny needle and it is not injected to great depth, so the injections take just 10-15 minutes. Immediately afterwards, you can go back to work or your other normal activities. You need to refrain from rubbing the injection sites for 24 hours, however, to not push the Botox to an unwanted muscle.

Are Botox injections painful?»

Because the small needle used and because it isn’t injected deeply, Botox® injections are not painful. Most people equate the sensation to that of a pinprick.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE BOTOX Injection PROCEDURE?»

The procedure is relatively quick and simple with minimal pain or discomfort. A series of pinpoint injections are made into the targeted muscles and, if necessary, a topical anesthetic cream or ice can be applied to help reduce discomfort.

WHAT TO EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER BOTOX® COSMETIC/DYSPORT®?»

You may experience some minor amount of swelling or bruising at the injection site. Arnica may be recommended to help with possible swelling and or bruising. Most patients return immediately to work or other normal activities.

WHAT ARE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS (RISKS)?»

The most common side effects are bruising, pain or tenderness at the injection site and temporary headache. All details of the procedure will be provided during your appointment.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?»

Most patients see results within five to seven days of the treatment. However, in some cases, it may take up to two weeks.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?»

Results typically last from three to five months.

WHO IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR BOTOX® COSMETIC/DYSPORT®?»

You may not be a candidate if you have certain neuromuscular disorders, if you are pregnant, if you are breastfeeding, or you have a skin infection at the planned injection site. You are not a candidate for Dysport® if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein.
