Cara Mia Medical Day Spa clinicians inject the following neuro-toxins:
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox® is derived from the bacteria that produce botulinum toxin type A, the same bacteria that can cause botulism. This sounds a little intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. Back in the 1950s scientists discovered that when the botulinum toxin was injected in very minute amounts into a muscle it stopped the muscle from contracting for a period of time. That research led to the development of Botox®. Botox® was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of involuntary eyelid spasms. The FDA approved Botox® for the treatment of wrinkles on the upper third of the face in 2002. Since then, Botox injections have been the single most popular cosmetic procedure worldwide every year.
HOW DO BOTOX AND DYSPORT WORK?
Botox® Cosmetic & Dysport® work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that are responsible for skin wrinkling. This injectable treatment can improve the appearance of certain wrinkles that are related to a facial expression such as crow’s feet, frown and forehead lines.
What is the botulinum toxin type A?
The botulinum toxin is produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which can be found throughout the natural world in soil and even water. There are seven distinct forms of botulinum toxin, with type A being using for Botox® and Dysport. The botulinum toxin stops muscle contractions by blocking nerve messages sent from the muscles to the brain.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX® COSMETIC AND DYSPORT®?
Botox® Cosmetic is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and has been used for many years in treating patients with muscular disease and over ten years in the cosmetic market. Dysport® is derived from cow based protein and is newer to the US market, but has been used in Europe for many years. Your clinician will assess and go over which treatment is right for you based on cost, amount of product needed to achieve desired results, and previous experience with the products.
What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?
Some people lump Botox® in with dermal fillers, but they work in completely different fashions. As mentioned above, Botox® works on dynamic wrinkles by blocking the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. The brain doesn’t receive the message to contract the muscle, so it stays relaxed and the wrinkle formed when the muscle contracts doesn’t form.
Dermal fillers work on the other type of wrinkle, known as static wrinkles. These wrinkles are due to sun damage, thinning skin with age, declining production of collagen, and personal habits such as smoking. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times and are not related to muscle contractions. Dermal fillers are injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, of area of volume loss and they simply “fill” in the space, pushing the skin upward and erasing the wrinkle.
Botox® doesn’t have any effect on static wrinkles, and dermal fillers don’t work on dynamic wrinkles.
